Fendi authentication: what to look for on vintage bags

A little history:

The dynamic Fendi family of Rome, Italy, has built a successful fashion for three generations. The house was founded by Adele Casagrande and Eduardo Fendi; they first produced high-quality fur and leather goods in 1925 in Rome.

The next generation of 5 sisters began to join their parents in the business in 1946. Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla and Alda each brough different talents and interests to invigorate Fendi products.

The following year Fendi began working with young designer Karl Lagerfeld, who gradually changed the modern concept of fur in fashion.

Moreover, was also responsible for their logo design of interlocking ‘F’.

Fendi has been on the forefront of fashion since the introduction of their Fendi Baguette, which was responsible along with Chanel, Gucci and Prada for igniting the handbag wars of the mid-to-late 1990s.

Selleria Art Work

Selleria bags are in our opinion Fendi’s top products. They are entirely handcrafted and handstiched (you can see how the large and regular stiches are always very noticeable on Selleria bags.

This highlights quality. Selleria internal tags are silver plated (Sterling Silver). Leather is also incredibly soft and of superior quality.

Look for a long digit serial number which in most cases in embossed on a leather tag inside on the of internal pockets.

Fendi’s 2 most popular patters have always been “Zucca” and “Zucchino” monograms. Here are 2 examples of each.

Below you can see a late 1990s top handle or shoulder bag with brown Zucca tones.

Fendi Zucca Hobo Bag

This is another beautiful blue tones zucca monogram Top handle shopper from the early 1980s. You can have a look at Fendi’s SAS leather logo attached in the internal canvas.

Fendi Vintage Tote Zucca Bag

Top handle purse with both silver metal plate and serial number inside.

Top Handle Zucchino Bag

This recent boston bronze tones zucchino monograms bag has internal logos, serials and Fendi code hologram inside.

Fendi bronze zucchino Boston Speedy Bag

Let’s start saying that serial references appear in ALL Fendi bags from the beginning of the ’90s to today. Fendi started using hologram labels in a consistent way from 2004/2005.

But let’s focus on Vintage Fendi Bags. Bags released from beginning of 1990s to very early 2000s should have:

– 6 to 8 digits;

– 12 digits;

– 16 digits (some serials could range from 15 to 17 digits if we consider symbols like the “-“symbol)

1970s Rare Wood Top Handle Tote Bag

1970s – Wood & Cuir gorgeous top handle purse. Logo is imprinted with fire onto the wood. I have NEVER seen an early 1970s Fendi imitation in over 20 years of fashion knowledge, but you never know.

1970s Blue Vintage Nappa Leather Top Handle Bag

This splendid ’70s top handle bag with its matching little purse and mirror has a very old Fendi logo inside.

Top handle bags from 1970s and 1980s

2 more examples of 1970s and 1970s Bags with their internal logos and hardware.

Fendi striped Cartella bag from the late 1980s / beginning of the 90s.

End of 1980s, very early 1990s – here’s a gorgeous Cartella, in classic Fendi striped pattern, with Fendi vertical logo’s along the sides of the dark stripes. Focus on the FENDI SAS gold metal logo, and also on the 8 digit early serial references.

Here’s an example of a beautiful tote gray leather Fendi from the late first decade of  2000s. See how many aspects there are to check genuineness, from the hardware, to the serial print on a leather small tag which will be probably hidden in one of the internal pockets, as this one was.

Brown Leather “Bag De Jour”

The “Bag De Jour” (2008),  has the middle part of its serial number which corrisponds to the model number (1st part), of the shop card. Sorry that code is not perfectly visible, but to help you out, the part “8BN162” which is the central part of the leather embossed serial on the top right (below picture) is the same as the initial part of the “ART.” number on the shop card bottom right.

“To You” bag, 2008

“To You” Bag, 2008. Again, central part of serial number (8BL100) corresponds to the 1st part of the number on the shop card.

Fendi “3Jours”, 2015

In 2010/2011, they started using another more advanced system called RFID, with more advanced authenticity purposes. Here’s a very recent Fendi 3Jour, with its RFID internal tag, and its serial number on its internal leather tag. A quick 360 video to help you out in focusing on the details of this bag:

360 view of “3Jours” Bag we recenly sold.

Hardware is also extremely important. Fendi hardware on vintage bags is highly recognizable. Below are some examples of bags and what to look for. Look for YKK metal zippers (could have FENDI logo), and beware plastic ones.

I have a vintage Fendi, it has all the logos and serial numbers but the zucca print canvas does not have an interior lining, which is weird.

I contacted one sight and they confirmed it was authentic but given the thinness of the bag (it is rather light). I don’t know if it is accurate. Would like to know if you have seen any bags like this.

Hello I have the same question as Ditha,
i have question about the Fendi zipper vintage (Fendi SAS) cosmetic bag and Fendi wallet has no zipper just a stamp. Do all Fendi zippers have ykk or FF logo under the zipper? What if there’s no logo behind the zipper? No serial numbers? Just a Fendi stamp gold or silver onto the leather? Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Liza

Hi! I am afraid the answer is no. By the similarities of the codes, you can reach a range of years which could give you the decade period.

Hi, I have been looking through my moms vintage Fendi’s and came across one with a 11 digit serial number. Is that typical for a bag made in the late 80’s or 90’s? Thank you!

Hi there, thanks for the great information! I was given what I believe to be authentic Fendi bag about ten years ago. If I had to guess I would say the bag may be 1990’s but I have no idea. It has an eleven digit code and the first few numbers are slightly faded out making it hard to tell what they say. A couple digits look like they could even be letters. Any info or advice? Have you ever heard of an eleven digit code? Thanks!

My best advise is to ask for a third party certificate of authenticity. Any professional second hand dealer should be able to provide this kind of service, complementary or paid for. There are many international well known authentication services which provide professional and accurate responses.

This in my opinion will reduce by far the risk of any issues on authenticity, and this is what we offer on our online boutiques.

Hi! I have a Fendi Zucca Magic bag I purchased in the early 2000. It has a beautiful canvas and nice gold hardware with the Fendi logo, and a serial number on the inside pocket inscribed in a piece of leather. However, it does not have a hologram sticker. I truly believe my bag is authentic, and might have been produced before the Fendi started with the hologram sticker. Is there a way to know for sure if it is authentic?

Hi Anna! If you want to increase your confidence, my suggestion is to have it authenticated from 3rd party authenticators. You should ask for this service prior to your purchase. Some sellers provide it complementary, others ask for a surcharge.

Hi, I have a question. I bought a vintage fendi bag a few years ago. I never got it checked whether it’s authentic or not. But I searched up it’s serial number and found another fendi bag different model though with the same serial number. Does that mean that mine is fake?

I have a vintage Fendi striped clutch bag (late 80’s – early 90’s). I believe it’s part of the Cartella collection. The code is printed in gold on the interior leather 18-B 13591. It also has a gold plate inside the bag with Fendi SAS and logo and Made in Italy. I am sure it’s genuine, but was hoping to get more info on the model and date so that I can consider retail. Is there any way I can do this? Thank you.

    Hello Marco,
I found a second hand Fendi bag but I’m not sure of the authenticity of it. The woman said she bought it 4/5 years ago (so let’s say 2017), it’s a zucca hobo (I think, she doesn’t know the model). There is an hologram, but I thought it was already RFDI at that time? Also inside, the logo is on a leather square, not on a piece of metal. Could it mean it’s fake?
    Thank you for your help
